Fire of Liberty
Amir Taheri has an excellent article on an upcoming conference on terrorism in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. He notes that the Arab people have been victims of terrorism for over some 25 years amassing some 250,000 deaths. While the nations and various regimes of the Arab World have been complicit in such terror by failing to destroy these groups or supporting them in hopes they committed their dirty work elsewhere.
The only sticking point is what the definition of terrorism really is. As Taheri notes, the Organization of the Islamic Conference was unable to agree whether attacks on civilians were considered acts of terrorism if they were considered a form of resistance against occupation. While any sane person would view this as an act of terrorism, these leaders still want to honor their fellow muslims in their resistance against Israel. While this might have been a formula of the past, the terrorists have come home to roost. These regimes realize that they can't play with these terrorists but have to destroy them. Therefore the duty of creating an effective counter-terrorism rests on their shoulders.
The only problem is that fleas never travel far from the dog. Regimes within the Middle East would solve most of their problems is through improvements of their own (think democracy, liberty and freedom).
