Fire of Liberty
Michael Barone has written a great column on the transformative nature of the president. It seems that President Bush has used his political skills to win several battles within the domestic and foreign policy fields in this nation.
Take for instance the current debate over Social Security reform. While the Democrats under the leadership of Harry Reid are resuming their "no" campaign on anything the president proposes, President Bush is charging ahead on reform. To begin with, the President knows how many votes he has in the Senate on his side as well as the number of votes the Democrats have, which are 45. Secondly, he knows what Senators are vulnerable in the "red states" and how popular Social Security reform is in these states. Therefore he has gone into the states of Montana, North Dakota, Nebraska, Arkansas and Florida with a clear message of reform that seems to be gaining in popularity. He's also started the transformation of the Middle East even though few doubted him.
I guess you never misunderestimate President Bush or you'll be eating dust wondering what passed you.
