The UN

Fire of Liberty

Once again the United Nations has a liittle problem and needs the help of the US. According to a article in The New York Sun, the UN needs a huge allottment of cash to finance the $1.2 billion renovation of the current UN headquarters along with $655 million for the construction of a 35 story swing space with a 100,000 sq. ft. park.

What's more interesting is that the UN wants the US to chip in a considerable chunk of change to finance this project. According to the article:

The GAO report says it assumes the federal government will pay 22% of the $1.2 billion loan principal, because America pays for 22% of U.N. operating costs. If the total construction cost reached as high as $2.45 billion, the portion supplied by American taxpayers would be $539 million. In addition, the GAO reported: "The Secretary General anticipates that the United States will provide a no-interest loan to finance the renovation." The United Nations has not yet accepted America's offer of a $1.2 billion loan at 5.5% interest. According to the State Department, the offer expires September 30.

It's funny how the UN can ridicule the US about deficits, foreign aid and military actions but can be our best friend when they need help. As with most of our dealings with the UN, the US has to step in to solve the problem.
