In his recent column, Ralph Peters notes that Mosul is the frontier town of the Sunni Triangle. It seems the terrorists and Saddam hanger-ons have decided that the northern city is where their stated goals will be achieved.

Peters' advise is that the US and Iraqi soldiers have to crush this inserrection before it gets way out of hand and turns into another Fallujah. Unless we stop this, these thugs could create a sectarian and ethnic fight between Sunni Arabs, Sunni Kurds or Kurds vs Arabs. The inserrection also threatens the transportation and trade routes between Iraq and Turkey. As Peters notes, If the literal "gold-mine" of the Sunni Triangle is taken out of the terrorist and Baathists hands then their enterprise is fruitless. To prevent this, the US military and the Iraqis are going to have to step up and drain the swamp of Mosul from these dregs of society.
