Fire of Liberty
Being a devotee of President Reagan, I'm a strong opponent of certain actions that restrict the actions of this great nation. With this at hand the US faces a daunting decision on the passage of The Law of the Sea Treaty (LOST). Such an treaty was a major deal with President Reagan throughout his 1976 and 1980 campaign and throughout his tenure in the White House. Basically this treaty, if passed, would give the International Seabed Authority under the banner of the UN the control over 70% of the sea thus giving them the control over where nations can mine, fish or place their ships. Even worse the treaty would also give the UN the power to levy taxes as well as the regulation of of research and exploration.
One can only imagine what would happen to the US if this policy was ever initiated. Since the UN would have the control of such powerful levers like taxation and regulation of the seas, they could restrain or prevent our military from conducting our commerce and the projection of our strength within the World.
While I'm not a expert on this Treaty, here are a few people who do have a better insight into LOST.
First here's a column by Phyllis Schlafly, who is a lawyer, founder of Eagle Forum, and a Conservative mavin who wrote the 1964 classic A Choice Not An Echo.
Secondly, here's an column and another by Frank J. Gaffney Jr, who is the President of the Center for Security Policy and former Assistant Secretary of State of Defense for International Security Policy in the Reagan Administration.
Finally, here's an article by Doug Bandow who is a senior fellow of the Cato Institute.
