Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness

Fire of Liberty

The Detriot News featured a piece by Father Robert Sirico, of the Acton Institute, in which he notes how the recent em>Kelo v. New London decision handed down by the Supreme Court is a tragic infringement on the God-given rights of all men. I particularly liked these paragraphs of Fr. Sirico's piece:
The Supreme Court's decision in the Kelo case stands in perfect opposition to the "ownership society" that President George Bush has been promoting. The ownership society is based on the empowerment of the individual citizen to be a steward of his own property. This is the foundation of a vigorous and healthy economy and society and, until now, one of the surest ways to limit government power.

In the Supreme Court's "new" ownership society, the very safety and security of God-given, inalienable rights are threatened. Pope Leo XIII was pointing to this when he described private ownership as "a natural right of man" and a right that must be held "sacred and inviolable."
I just hope folks in this country wake up and realize that the "robed ones" have a greater impact on their lives than the thought.
