Yemen

Fire of Liberty

The Christian Science Monitor has an interesting article on Yemen. It seems that Yemen has developed a unique way of dealing with terrorism. Based on the article, the Yemeni government has found a way to counter militant Islam through the usage of Islamic scholars. On individual in particular is Judge Hamoud al-Hitar, who uses the Koran to challenge recently jailed Islamic radicals. His basic arguments is:
"If you can convince us that your ideas are justified by the Koran, then we will join you in your struggle," Hitar told the militants. "But if we succeed in convincing you of our ideas, then you must agree to renounce violence."
It is true that we need things like this to confront Islamic fundamentalism, I still think certain individuals are well beyond help and only force wil stop them from doing their dirty work. Yet I foresee this idea of using the Koran to dissuade terrorism is definitely something that's needed, especially in places like Saudi Arabia. If the Saudis promoted a more moderate Islam instead of the Wahhabi strain that preaches hate and promotes the culture of death, the World would be a better place. Maybe this will catch on but don't expect it to happen anytime soon.
