Culture War

Fire of Liberty

The great Mark Steyn has an excellent column in The Chicago Sun-Times on the ongoing culture war. I know, you're wondering why is this guy talking about the culture war when we're battling terrorists. Well, the simple answer is that we have to ensure the continuation and strength of our culture to fight back these terrorists. When a nation lets its culture slip and slowly decline into a mushy gobbledygook, it tends to lose its moral fiber to take on a challenge. Though we're a long way from a complete fall like Athens, Rome, or Constantinople, we should steel ourself from the destructive nature that these cultures experienced. Therefore, we should forswear all of the craziness of political correctness and this squishy hug-athon mentality known as multi-culturalism. If we don't return to the melting-pot and the overall Western tradition, we could well be destroyed like Carthage.

To fully understand the culture problem that faces this nation, check out Lengthened Shadows: America and its Institution in the Twenty-First Century , which is edited by Roger Kimball and Hilton Kramer. For those who don't know, the two editors are also editors of The New Criterion - a magazine that champions the Western tradition and American culture (the good aspects not the rot). If you want to know about the culture war, check the book out. Here's the review of the book, here.
