Fire of Liberty
President Bush has put some muscle behind the US in the decrepit UN. In a noon announcement, The White House presented John Bolton as the US Ambassador to the UN. Currently John Bolton is Under Secretary of State for Arms Control & International Security and has established himself as a tough as nails arms control chief when dealing with dangerous states like North Korea, Iran and Syria. In the same manner that Daniel Patrick Moniyhan & Jeane J. Kirkpatrick served as UN Ambassador at the UN, Secretary Bolton will be a champion for the United States and its mission of spreading freedom & democracy Worldwide. Expect a lot of attention to be paid to Secretary Bolton in his Senate confirmation hearings as well as his tenure at the United Nations.
With all of the scandals wreaking havoc within the vaunted halls of Turtle Bay, Secretary Bolton will provide a voice of sanity and a sense of moral clarity in the gaggle of internationalism. We can expect Secretary Bolton to provide a guiding hand to reform and don't expect him to back down from a challenge. Through his past writings and actions, you should expect to see Bolton to play hardball with the feckless dictators and autocrats that partake in the UN. Though he can be a "hardliner" at times, Secretary Bolton has also developed a flair for implementing multilateral initiatives like the Proliferation Security Initiative, which is a 60 nation coalition that was established to interdict the trade and proliferation of WMD's and the delivery systems. See here for more details on the PSI. Instead of reading my platitudes about the incoming Ambassador, check out the following articles here, and here . Also, check out Bolton's thoughts on the International Criminal Court in a speech he presented to The Federalist Society, here. Secretary Bolton will be a good friend for the US in the UN and expect him to stand up to any challenges that might arise in the following four years. I'd say the Bush White House has made a great choice as his Ambassador to the UN. I know he's a good choice when The Financial Times has several articles, here and here, calling him a "hard-liner" and hinting he's a neo-conservative.(How they know this I don't know. He's was never been a liberal and I don't think he's old enough to have rapped with Irving Kristol, Midge Decter of Norman Podhoretz on Trotsky or Lenin at CUNY in the Alcove in the 30's.). Anyway, Good luck Secretary Bolton or should I say Good Luck to the UN. All I can say is Let's Roll!!!
