South Ameica

Here's a piece in The Times by Bronwen Maddox on the pink-tide of socialism sweeping South America. While it's a good way from the scourge of Communism that plagued the continent in the 60's-80's, this pink-tide remains a looming threat. Take a look.

The international conduct of Venezuela, Brazil, and Argentina may not be as pro-American as some would like, but much of this is reaction against the IMF and in the case of Venezuela much more a reaction to the Bush administration's support of the opposition movement that tried to oust Hugo Chavez. Individual liberty is not being sacrificed in these countries; the problem is that their economies are very top-heavy, and that there is a need to create more opportunity for the middle and lower classes or else the economy will fall so out of balance as to collapse. This would not be good; South America is full of natural resources and as Brazil is now showing, quite capable of being a major factor in the world economy. Argentina's IMF proposal is a bit arrogant on their part, but a necessary measure to get the country back on its feet. It's not an anti-American stance - most south american people don't care one way or the other about the United States - but an attempt to do what is best for themselves. And can you blame them?
