Bob Dole: An Pillar of Our Greatest Generation

Here's an excellent review over at The Washington Examiner on former US Senator Bob Dole. It's called One Soldier's Story: A Memoir and covers the Senator's journey from 1930' & 40's as a 19 year old college kid in Kansas reaching for the stars as a medical doctor who was interrupted by WWII. During this time the young Bob Dole would enlist in the Army medical corps hoping for OCS but was shipped to Brooklyn College in NY for more education. As with most soldiers seeking an advancement and a chance to fight the good fight, the future Senator would have an opportunity to enlist for OCS training as a infantry officer, which kept him from the War until the Spring of 1945 when he was assigned the post of platoon leader of the 10th Mountain Division in Italy. As a platoon leader, Dole would sustain horrific injuries to his shoulders and arm during a rescue of a fellow soldier on Hill 913 in the Apennine Mountains.

Along with his honorable service and sacrifice for this nation, Dole shows us his tough but optimistic road to recovery that strengthened his soul and pushed him to study law and serve in the Senate some 27 years. If you want a good read about "Our Greatest Generation" then the memoir of the purple heart awardee Robert Dole is probably a good start.
