Within the last few hours since President Bush used a recess appointment (after countless roadblocks) to place John Bolton in the US Ambassadors seat in the UN, I've heard countless members of Congressmen and pundits saying the President went around the authority of Congress with such an action. Well, Thanks to Eric Pfeiffer over at National Review Online's The Buzz, it seems that the Democrats crowing about recess appointments might need to hold off on the criticism, especially if they read this:
During his two terms, Bill Clinton had 140 recess appointments, including former Commerce Secretary Mickey Kantor.Maybe the critics should take some Pepto or an Tylenol and call it a day on Bolton. But as usual, the Dems don't know when to stop and will only look silly and petty like Dean was in Iowa.
Former President Bush made 77 recess appointments during his one term.
Ronald Reagan made 243 recess appointments during his two terms.
Jimmy Carter made 68 recess appointments during his term in office.
In October, 1961 John F. Kennedy appointed Thurgood Marshall to the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
President Dwight Eisenhower made three recess appointments to the Supreme Court, including Chief Justice Earl Warren, and associate justices William Brennan and Potter Stewart. All three eventually received full Senate confirmation.
