Fire of Liberty
John Fund has a good article on immigration on Opinion Journal, which can be found here. I guess I fall on the side of Victor Davis Hanson, who argues in his book Mexifornia: A State of Becoming and his recent article at NRO for legal iimmigration, enforcement of immigration laws and a return to assimilationist policy in our education system and government.
I feel that in order to continue to be the Shining City on the Hill, then we have to slow the tide of illegal immigration. I welcome everyone to this great nation as long as they do it legally. We've also have to move beyond the policy of multi-culturalism and return back to a "melting-pot" nation that had different pasts but still learned US history and spoke english. If we achieved such for 2oo plus years, why can't we now?
To fully understand what I'm arguing for, one should check out Samuel P. Huntington's excellent book Who Are We: The Challenges to America's National Identity.
