Iraq: The Quest of Democracy

Fire of Liberty

Iraq's parliament has finally decided on their President and its two Vice-Presidents. According to this article in The Times, the 275 member body selected Jalal Talabani(Kurd) as the President, as for the two Vice-Presidents they selected Adel Abdul Mahdi(Shia- Finance Minister of Alawi Gov't) and Ghazi Yawar (Sunni- former President in provisional gov't). Though The Times makes a big deal out of the parliament taking nine weeks to make these selections, it was still an Iraqi decision that is completely removed from the US's sphere of influence. As with all decisions in a democracy, you will have your disagreements and squabbles that will last countless weeks but in the long run a solution is generated. Iraq might be slow in getting the semantics of democratic government down pat but then again Rome wasn't built in a day. I wish the Iraqis good fortune in their quest for a bright and vibrant democracy.
