Fire of Liberty
According to this article in The Times and this one in The Financial Times, the Tory party under the leadership of MP Michael Howard has seen a resurgence in its poll numbers prior to the May 5th election. Though the poll numbers are relatively fluid at this time and could change tomorrow, it still has to be somewhat of a shock to Tony Blair and his party faithful in Labour. I guess when you've been in power and have ignored the various domestic problems like immigration, crime, massive hooliganism, travelers and the various other declines in the UK countryside and the population in general, you get a voting public who will seek a change and an improvement in their lot.
I hope that the Tories look at these numbers and continue their current campaign on these specific issues. If they look back at the pre-Thatcher years they will recall that crime was on the rise and the Thatcherite Tories made a good showing with two more to boot. The can also look over the pond into the US and see that the same policy garnered Rudy Giuliani great success in his dual bids for mayor of New York City. If the Tories hold firm, they could far surpass their miserable showings in 1997 and 2001. We'll see.
